I accidentally ficlet…
Akkaleena…I am so sorry.
Finland tossed and turned for what felt like hours in the dark bedroom. It didn’t matter what he tried, he couldn’t fall asleep. Not again.
Every time he tried to close his eyes he saw the images again and again. Fire. Destruction. People screaming silently in agony. He tried to think of happier things, tried to focus on the warmth coming from the man next to him - but even the sound of Sweden’s heavy breathing did nothing to calm him down.
Sitting up, Finland pushed his side of the duvet off himself, letting the cool night air engulf him instead as he hugged his pillow protectively. It wasn’t calming as much as it was a way to fight off the memories of the nightmare.
Shivering slightly, Finland continued to stare into the darkness.
He flinched at the sudden feeling of Sweden intertwining their fingers together.
“Sorry, did I wake you?” he mumbled into the pillow, refusing to meet Sweden’s eyes.
“Maybe,” Sweden mumbled sleepily back as he rubbed his eyes with his free hand. Yawning he slowly pushed himself up in the bed.
“Nightmare?” he inquired softly as he untangled their fingers and slid his arm around Finland’s shoulders instead.
All Finland could do was nod, squeezing the pillow even harder against his chest as he tried to not even blink. Perhaps is he kept his eyes open for long enough they’d stop showing him those terrible things.
“Nothing can hurt you here,” Sweden whispered as he pressed a soft kiss to Finland’s temple. “Keep you safe, promise,”
Finland leant closer to Sweden, closing his eyes for a moment; the embrace washing away most of the tension and fear in his body.
“What if it comes back?” he worriedly asked as he turned to face Sweden. The taller nations eyes half-lidded from sleep, yet still so focused on Finland.
He considered himself lucky to have the Swede next to him.
“If it does, I’ll be here to chase it away again,” Sweden hummed softly and pulled Finland into a tight embrace, dragging the smaller man down and under the covers again.
“You sound so certain of yourself,” Finland retorted with a low voice, he didn’t sound convicnced but the warmth Sweden emmited at least helped him calm down slightly.
Sweden chuckled and placed another kiss to Finland’s forehead.
“‘Course,” he replied with a smile.
Finland shock his head before closing his eyes, resting his head against Sweden’s chest. The feeling of Sweden’s chest rising and falling with each breath was a comfort only made better by the faint sound of the Swede’s heart steadily beating.
Sighing contently, Finland let himself drift of to sleep. Nightmares and images of dread the last thing on his mind in the comfort of Sweden’s arms.
